Public PSC: Private Client Workshop

Bournemouth University

One day workshop dealing with different aspects of private client work and, in particular, dealing with clients as individuals who have a wide variety of ages, needs and expectations.

Trainees will be encouraged to consider the best way of obtaining information from clients and explaining to them in clear language concepts that are highly technical and, from time to time, involve sensitive personal issues.

Much of the day will be spent dealing with taking instructions on Wills and preparing them, but there will also be time allocated to consider allied matters such as Enduring Powers of Attorney and the administration of estates of a deceased person.

The main headings will be:

  • Ensuring that the client becomes a client for life and gathering detailed information from the first meeting (including any identification procedure)
  • Taking instructions for basic Wills and preparing them efficiently in terms of cost and delivery
  • Advising clients on more complicated issues where inheritance tax may be involved
  • Advice on trusts in Wills to protect vulnerable individuals or to ensure that children ultimately benefit
  • Considering the implications of civil partnerships
  • Drafting Wills with discretionary trusts and schemes to enable surviving spouse or civil partner to remain in the family home
  • Enduring Powers of Attorney and the Mental Incapacity Bill
  • The basic outline of probate procedures
  • An overview of inheritance tax
